Volunteer Appreciation
During the month of April, we have the honor of celebrating our amazing volunteers! Montrose Regional Health is blessed to have over 75 faithful people who graciously donate their time, talent and treasure to our patients, families and caregivers in many different areas. When you enter the main entrance of the hospital, you are greeted by smiling faces who ask, “How can I help you?” As you travel into our Golden Leaf Gift Shop, you are directed to a large variety of merchandise, books, flowers, cards and some of the most beautiful quilts and homemade craft items around. When you attend the early blood draws and the MRH Health Fair, you are greeted and assisted by outgoing and helpful people. This incredible, giving group of people donated over 5,882 hours to the hospital in 2022. In addition, last year they donated $9,600 to purchase three automatic external defibrillators for the MRH campus.
We have volunteers in almost every department in the hospital. Some of their duties include making copies, delivering juice and necessities to patients, filing, assisting with patients and families who have had surgery or are also located in the Emergency Department. The front desk volunteers help visitors find their way around the hospital. We also have several volunteer chaplains, led by Dr. Mary Vader, who visit with our patients and respond to the hospital in the event of a trauma.
The success of Montrose Regional Health’s 10 cent Book Sale Fundraiser may surprise you: this ongoing campaign raises around $300 per month that goes towards health-related causes in our hospital. With westerns, autobiographies, children’s books, romance, literature, cookbooks, and everything in between—the sale of our paperbacks and hardbacks have played a valuable role in promoting our community’s health.
How does the book sale work? It starts with generous members of our community who donate their used books. It’s a fundraiser that is empowered by our volunteers who donate their time to assist with book organization & distribution. The success of the campaign is given a boost by the book buyers, who many times are abundantly charitable and pay more than the price of the books they are purchasing. The funds generated by this campaign go right back into helping with the needs of your local hospital.
If you have used books you no longer want, donations are always welcome. While we don’t accept magazines, practically any used book in good condition would be a delightful contribution towards the health of your neighbors. To donate, you can bring your books to the Lobby Information Desk or the Gallery Information Desk next to the Gift Shop.
We are always looking for more volunteers – men and women. After completing an application, interviewing and passing a background check, you will be matched to a department or position that meets your needs. The hours are flexible – you can donate a lot of hours or only a couple a week. The rewards are many! If you are interested in volunteering at MRH – give us a call at (970) 240-7341. As the year 2000 Miss America Heather French Henry said, “volunteering is at the very core of being a human. No one has made it through life without someone else’s help.”
