Tonzi brings statewide leadership in Axonics® Therapy; joins colleague Craig Peterson, MD
MONTROSE, Colo. (September 22, 2025) – Montrose Regional Health (MRH) is excited to welcome Michael S. Tonzi, MD, to the new MRH Urology Clinic, located at 3330 S. Rio Grande Ave., Suite 140, Montrose, CO. The clinic opened September 2, 2025, with urologist Craig Peterson, MD, and now expands to include Tonzi, who has been serving patients in the Montrose area for the past two years. The two physicians, longtime colleagues, are working together to grow access to urologic care on the Western Slope.
Tonzi is one of the most experienced providers of Axonics Therapy in Colorado, performing more implants than any other physician in the state. Axonics Therapy is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a small device to gently stimulate the nerves that control bladder and bowel function, helping patients overcome incontinence and regain quality of life. “Bringing advanced therapies like Axonics to Montrose means patients can access world-class care close to home,” Tonzi said. “I am passionate about helping people live pad-free, with dignity and confidence, and I look forward to continuing that work here on the Western Slope.”
In the past two years, Tonzi has performed nearly 140 minimally invasive incontinence procedures, giving patients lasting relief and independence. His clinical interests include benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), kidney stones, pelvic organ prolapse, prostate cancer, and bladder cancer. Tonzi also offers other minimally invasive BPH treatments including UroLift™, a catheter-free procedure to hold enlarged prostate tissue out of the way, and Aquablation® therapy, a procedure that uses a high-velocity water jet to remove excess prostate tissue.
Tonzi earned his medical degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse and completed his internship and urologic surgery residency at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine-Chattanooga. He is board eligible with the American Board of Urology.
An avid outdoorsman, Tonzi was drawn to the San Juans by his love of the mountains. He enjoys skiing, trail running, rock climbing and gardening.
